Day One - Sept 11

In Sept. 10, 2009, I lead a photo tour to western Canada for the purpose of photographing grizzly bears, black bears, whales, eagles, and fascinating landscapes. For future check http://www.outdoorphotoworkshops.com.

Day One - Sept 11

Several adventurous souls arose early this first morning to see what we could find around Duncan, and just happened into a little coastal park, called Cherry Point just as the sun was beginning to rise.

Our first group outing on Vancouver Island was the Raptor Rehab Center located in Duncan. This is a wonderful facility and if you ever travel to this part of the world, I highly recommend spending some time here.

One of the most interesting things to do is to don a falconer's glove and have a hawk alight on your arm - the hawk featured here is named Duck. These birds are allowed to fly free, but have been trained to returned when called.

The center has a large number of raptors that in many instances are rescues that will be released back into the wild. The staff was wonderful to us and I believe everyone got excellent images.

Nice stuff Jim.

I made a quick pass through mine and posted them to flicker:

and a small movie here:

I had fun on the trip, but you can't really do this with a 200mm lens
If Canon would only upgrade the 100-400 to a F4

ps. My hockey stuff is here:

Thanks Jeff! I agree, a 200mm is a bit of a challenge - give Gary Farber a call at Hunts - he sometimes has 100-400mm Canon lenses refurbished on sale. I picked up mine from him and only paid $1000. I have more to post and I think a couple of you in it! I looked at all our videos tonight and will likely start editing soon.

I never thought the 100-400 was really worth it because it's a bit slow at the long end. There were a lot of shots I missed (like the otters and the black bear) because 200mm was too short, but with my doubler, 400mm at 5.6 was too slow (even at ISO1600).

If Canon did a 100-400 F4 or 200-400 F4 (like Nikon) it be worth getting.

I agree I would prefer a faster lens and even purchased a 200mm f/2.8 prime for that reason (still is f/5.6 with a 2x, though) - but I still find the 100-400mm to be a valuable lens and most of the shots on our trip was shot with that lens. Consider the 500mm f/4 will run $4500+, the 100-400mm is a bargain considering it is only a f/5.6 at the 400mm end. However, that 500mm is really a sharp piece of glass!!
